It is rightly said that Canada (especially vancouver) is other home for indians, especially the people from punjab.
The moment you land at airport and board a taxi, there is 99% probability that you will find a punjabi taxi driver.I said 99% because 99% of taxi's are driven by indians (punjabis), and the rest 1 % by other nationalities. As indians are leading ahead of other nationalities, in other areas of technology, they are not behind in this field too.
Every talk starts with their english in punjabi style. You can just think of any punjabi dhaba songs and replace punjabi words with english.
But they are too friendly, they become friends with you so soon, and start sharing salary details too.Remember, you should know the conversion rate :)) to tell them in CAD, or indian rupees. They know how to intrude or jump over the walls of privacy made by you.Beleive me :)
Now starts the ballad of their life. Most of them came to canada before I was born. They earn a lot more than any professional, and proud to say that openly, actually thats the only thing to be proud of and be satisfied in that job. They earn like 7000-9000 dollars per month.
If you say in a low tone, that you are paid less, they are very kind, and offer you a suggestion to drive a taxi, or do a part-time job in security.
Most of them are learned too, as they say, "Many people who are learned, did not get job in india and came here".If asked for qualification, he will say, I know learned people who persued BA, or diploma in some stream, and did not get a job.
Also, if you speak in english, they will be astonished and may ask a very innocent and ignorant question,"How do you speak such a fluent english? We have people who are BA, but cannot speak good english".
Ignorance is a bliss, and the same applies to them. Most of them who are experienced , got and lost their hair in canada, may give you genuine advices for your stay in canada.
One of the best advices was , never beleive in 3Ws in canada.Women (they may cheat you), Weather (It many be snowfall, rain and then sun), and third is the Work(you may be fired anytime).
There were a few people from iran, china, canada, pakistan who were amongst the 1% of remaining drivers. They were really nice, and kind too.Since they interacted too much with indians, they were also well aquainted with the mentality of indians, especially the ones they interacted with(ofcourse the other indian taxi drivers). They also treat you in same friendly manner, and ask nasty questions ."Sir, did you goto night club? Did you find a gal in disco? Did you manage to see peep show bla bla bla?"
Not only this, they will advise you without asking you."Sir, it is only money here, get some drinks for a girl and thats it".Finally you will get time to utter some words and have a headache pill.
Another thing, you have to be a good teacher, to explain to them the terms like software and hardware :)
They really prove that age is only a number, as the driver may be 20 or 60, he will ask the same subset of questions without considering the difference between your age and his age.
Last but not the least, it helps you in professional life too :), you gain a lot of patience, to tolerate all kinds of people and answer the same questions again and again.
Some of them miss their indian life and are pissed off with their children(born and brought up here). They enjoyed themselves, but cannot tolerate their children enjoying :).
Will post some more content soon guys....
Cheers,
Himant
